Last year I had the incredible opportunity of spending some days in Fiji. That is a beautiful place with wonderful people, and even though no one says it, most Fijians are African descendants! So, African people got to Fiji (and Australia as it seems Aborigines are African descents too) way before the European. And the books don't say that! I believe, it is about the time that we learn that history does not need to diminish or ignore others ( women, black people, Asians) achievement to feel great and superior, don't you think?
Fiji also has a significant Indo population and Chinese - adding different cultures and awesome food to the place.
For me, it was a fabulous and empowering surprise to see that Africans got to this paradise long ago! And on top of it, I was "almost" able to completely blend in - Fijians said that I looked like Fijian, they only knew I wasn't because of my clothing, the Brazilian in me believes in color, short skirts, small bikinis and cleavage.
I went to Fiji by myself, and I couldn't feel safer. They have gun control and most of all, they are a peaceful community. Everybody is very welcoming and helpful. If you ask for directions, they right away offer to accompany and guide you to your destination.
So if you dream about going to South Pacific, Fiji is a paradise! And you will have more than 300 islands to explore! I only had time to go to Viti Levu, so I landed in Nadi. I stayed in Pacific Harbour and had the chance to visit Suva and its museum. I guess there is not need to say that Fiji will be in my heart forever!!
